Marine Soundproofing & Boat Sound Deadening.
On this blog, we will discuss the differences between marine soundproofing & boat sound deadening and provide a detailed analysis of which marine soundproofing products or boat sound deadening material can be fitted in which circumstance.
Soundwaves know no boundaries until they meet specifically developed materials to absorb sound (marine soundproofing), be blocked by an acoustic barrier material (boat sound deadening) or a combination of the two (marine laminate insulation).
The frequency of the noise issue usually determines the marine soundproofing or boat sound deadening product we would recommend. When there is low frequency noise resulting in vibration such as within an engine bay we recommend you use boat sound deadening pads to stop or reduce panel resonance, thus adding mass to the marine panels. This is instead of trying to absorb the soundwaves with marine soundproofing products as low frequency soundwaves have a very long wavelength. You can find boat sound deadening pads below if you click the picture.
We recommend you cover at least 30% surface area with the boat sound deadening pads fitted towards the centre of the panels, however some boat owners choose to fit 100% coverage leading to a barrier effect. You may also want to consider an acoustic barrier product on top of the boat sound deadening pads to add further mass to the marine panels and create a barrier effect ensuring little noise can penetrate through the material combination.
We suggest you use a 5Kg Mass Loaded Vinyl Layer to obtain the acoustic barrier effect. With both self adhesive and plain backed variants on offer our products meet EuroCLASS B-s2-d0 flame retardancy and is conformable enabling it to be fitted into hard to reach areas. The combination of the these two boat sound deadening product types will offer you a combined drop of 27dB reduction in an enclosed environment.
Marine soundproofing products can then be fitted within an enclosed space to absorb the noise and reduce the reflectivity. The low frequency areas usually require a thicker marine soundproofing product. These products are available in standard, hydrophobic and oleophobic fibre types, however you can also use an oleophobic and hydrophobic cover material on top of the surface of the insulator to provide protection against oil ingress.
We offer a standard fibre make up which is competitively priced in 20mm and 30mm thickness which can be layered using contact adhesive to provide further lower frequency absorption.
